What Comes Around – a self-remixing album for Android smartphones

I have just released a new full-length album called What Comes Around. This time not on available on iTunes or one of the other music download stores, but instead it’s available on the Android Market. See, it exists only as an App and it remixes itself on every listen. Listeners also have the option of  turning on the microphone and letting the app mix in environmental sounds. Have a listen to the free version doing its thing below.

What Comes Around [Free] – First Iteration by MoShang

Get the 5-song free version from the Market here, and the 14-song full version here. Your thoughts and suggestions are most welcome!

Here’s a video of What Comes Around doing its thing on a walk in the park.

I’ve managed to thank two of them in person on this forum, but again a huge thanks to the creators of the free software that makes this album possible, Miller Puckette (Pure Data), Peter Brinkmann (libpd), and Chris McCormick (PdDroidParty). I’ve left details of my process on this forum (towards the bottom of the page).

Live Online #130: Data

Over the weekend, I started to get familiar with Pure Data, a free programming language for music and visuals. I was first introduced to Pd by Lee Chun in 2008, but I couldn’t wrap my head around it at the time. I’ve since discovered awesome tutorials for Pd on YouTube (the ones by Dr. Rafael Hernandez are especially great) and it’s really helped to demystify Pd for me. Watch this space!

MLO Special: Groove Suite – music for piano and strings

(photo: cc-by Jana Obscura)

If you were around in the 80s, you may remember the Hooked on Classics series of albums. If you weren’t, lucky you! Just kidding, my dad loved playing the tape on repeat on long family car-trips. Basically, it was all the famous bits from classical orchestral works strung together and set to a disco beat. Well, I’m doing something like the reverse of that here – taking my usual beat driven MLO sets and replacing the drums with strings. If you’re having a hard time imagining what that might sound like, just hit play below…

Playlist: (1)Andromeda (2)Bootes (3)Abeeku (4)Ladybug (5)Mufti (6)Nulicon (7)Obelus (8)Reboant

This recording was made at Music Island (Second Life) on June 26th, 2011.

Download the complete set (56 minutes) for US$ 4.99 (256kbps mp3 – highest quality):

The Groove Suite is now also available as an album with 8 individual tracks from CD Baby, iTunes, Amazon, and various other digital outlets.

Soulstice – Realistic (Monumental Mix)

I’ve just finished a remix of trip-hop band Soulstice‘s track Realistic. It’s for a remix contest hosted by Om Records (whom I must admit to having a bit of a crush on).

Realistic (Monumental Mix) by MoShang

If you like the track, please head on over and vote for it here. Like I said, it’s a contest and in this case only the remixes with the top 10 most votes will get heard by the judges. I wanted to get all indignant about it, but then I remembered that pop music is by definition a popularity contest ;^/ Either way, I like my version.

***UPDATE***

Nope, not a winner this time – though I’ll happily accept the honorable mention.

Dark Star

I got a new toy today in the form of a Doepfer Dark Energy – cute as a button! I made this demo for it to see if I can get my head around it. Hey, I think I can!
