MLO#24 vs Electric Sheep

A big thanks to David Carboni for tipping me off to the cool synergy between my tunes and the hypnotic visuals from the Electric Sheep screensaver – or rather, “collaborative abstract artwork” as its creator Scott Draves describes it. In short, rather than just displaying the visuals each computer running the screensaver forms part of supercomputer and renders individual frames for these spectacular animations. Even better, the resulting visuals are made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial 3.0 (USA) license, meaning I am free to make this mashup with my music.

For this video, I grabbed some rendered animations from Sheep Packs 3 & 7 and dumped them into animoto.com, along with an extract from Live Online #24 – cool timing, since animoto.com has just added the video uploading feature in the last couple of weeks.

This mashup is similarly licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial 2.5 (Taiwan) license and you can download the original animoto renders here:

Emma & Yi Interview

Emma & Yi are from Australia and are taking part in the Taiwan Best Trip contest organized by the Taiwan Tourism Bureau. They wanted to focus their trip on music and dance around the island and I met them at a tea house in Taichung last Friday for a short interview. Unfortunately, they had some technical issues, so we re-did the interview via Skype. Want to help Em&Yi out? Vote for their Sounds of Taiwan trip at the website above.

Machinima

I’ve just made a playlist of machinima(s) (what’s the plural?) of me performing in Second Life. Most recently SL resident Aiden Witrial has made a whole bunch of me at various shows. I want to thank Aiden and the other producers for taking the time to do this – it’s been a great help in getting word out about the tunes.

Making Music (c. 2008)

I meant to share this long ago, but never got around to it. Here’s a video I made to illustrate my working method for a presentation I did at a Creative Commons workshop entitled “Asia and the Commons” in Taipei (Taiwan) in January 2008. My presentation was called “Jamming With Machines” and this vid. was not intended as tutorial, but just to give some idea of how I go about building tracks. It’s a little outdated now, but someone might find it of interest ;^)

Suncake Lounge teaser

After the cool photoshoot Mark Forman (bbluesman.com) did for me a couple of weeks ago, I quickly struck while the iron was hot and asked him to do some photos of me and Chris Bailey for the cover of Suncake Lounge Vol.1. We went to Donghai here in Taichung last Saturday, and Mark again came up with some very cool shots. Here we have the result of the photoshoot set to music from the album. Enjoy this teaser!

Freedom Zen

I’ve just finished the video I’ve been working on for my track Freedom Zen with Chang Jui-chuan. The track is off the CABACA album (more info and download links here) which has just also become available on CD Baby for those who want to support this and possible future collaborations by buying a copy of the CD.

I wanted Jui-chuan’s lyrics to play the starring role in the video, so I “textified” CC licensed still images I found on flickr, with the help of visual keywords that Jui-chuan provided me with. I animated the images in AfterEffects, and mixed them with some blue-screen footage I shot with a Xacti CG65 camcorder. I drew some images with blue permament marker and Emily kindly wrote the traditional and simplified characters for me. To save time, I rendered some sections and backgrounds online with animoto.

There’s a link to watch the video in high quality on the song’s YouTube page. The video is also available on Vimeo and there’s a link to download the original 150MB .wmv-file.

Unfortunately I have no pics from when we recorded Chris Bailey’s guitar for Freedom Zen, but here are Chuang Tyng-Ruey’s photos from the recording session in Taipei where we recorded Jui-chuan’s vocals and Bobo on the drums.

Distant Towns (Sapporo)

I learned about animoto.com yesterday – someone had used one of my CC licensed tracks in their video and it looked intriguing. So, I thought I’d try my hand myself.

Here’s an unreleased track, Distant Towns, after the Animoto treatment. The images are from my trip to Sapporo to attend the iCommons Summit – most of them from Moerenuma Park.

The track has since been released under the title Faraway Places on the Stone Bell EP.
