I want to give you an audio tour of Taichung City which is my home here in Taiwan. To put you in the picture, Taichung is located roughly in the centre of Taiwan and it’s is the third largest city after Taipei and Kaohsiung. I’ve been living in Taichung since I arrived in Taiwan going on 7 years ago.

Download Songs for Taichung for US$ 1.33 (256kbps mp3 – highest quality):

00:00 Part 1 [Construction]

We start at my home which is on the 4th floor of an apartment building in Dali City, itself a suburb of Taichung south of the city center. I’m on the balcony and capture the sound of construction going on next door. Our neighbor is a pretty unsightly parking lot, but if you look at satellite photos of my neighborhood on Google Earth, you’ll see that what is now the parking lot used to be a rice paddy – probably until about 5 years ago or so. That explains the water tower and small pond under my my window.

07:05 Part 2 [Cycling]

Let’s get out and about. I invite you to hop on my bicycle with me as we brave the traffic and head out into the streets of Taichung. We’re armed with a sound recorder to capture anything of interest, so let’s see what we can find. Ready? Here we go.

12:10 Part 3 [Recreation]

Our first stop is Taichung Park roughly at the center of the City. The idea is to get out of the noise and traffic for a bit. My nerves are a little frazzled from the trip here, and I’m also a little frustrated that thus far we haven’t found too many useful sounds. While, I ponder where I should take you next I beat this tattoo on some exercise equipment the City Government kindly provides in most of Taichung’s parks.

16:53 Part 4 [Golden Years]

A little further along Taichung Park we come across some old folks who have gathered in the shade of the trees to play Chinese chess and to chat the afternoon away. Let’s stay a while and eavesdrop.

21:12 Part 5 [Commerce]

Hunting sounds like this is hot work – let’s quickly pop into a 7-11 and get something to drink. By the way, if you ever come to Taiwan don’t make the mistake my friend did and use a 7-11 as a landmark – there are literally hundreds of them everywhere in Taichung and around Taiwan.

27:08 Part 6 [Market]

It’s time to visit one of Taichung’s popular night market streets, Yijhong Jia. Hey, it’s only 3PM, but already Yijhong Street is crowded – there’s no way we can ride through the throng. Better to get off and push the bike.

32:54 Part 7 [Teawhistle] from Made in Taiwan (2004)

After a visit to Yijhong Street, it’s time to head back home. To my first apartment in Taichung, as it turns out, where an old gentleman used to come round every night with a with a big kettle mounted on the back of his bicycle. You can hear steam escaping from it with a whistling sound

Running Time: 37:00

I do hope you’ve enjoyed this small trip around my city. I haven’t come close to showing you everything, so maybe we can do this again some time.

Admittedly, I’m a fan of Prof. Lessig’s ideas, as is a growing legion of people who have discovered the benefits of licensing their work under Creative Commons licenses.

I had the privilege to meet Prof. Lessig at the iSummit held in Sapporo, Japan last year. On the spur of the moment, I presented an idea regarding CC+ licenses and a sample marketplace on ccmixter.org – it was generally considered a good idea by those in attendance, and though it’s not been implemented, I’m happy I threw the idea out there and maybe someone will act on it in the future.

I’ve been doing these live online mixes in Second Life for some months now, and have been kicking around the idea of doing a podcast, but only now put two and two together. As from now, I’ll be posting a new online mix here every week. I haven’t yet figured out exactly how to do syndication for this, though I guess you can stay updated by adding the feed for this blog to your reader (click here to do so now). For now you’ll be able to listen to every mix over at play.fm and download the latest mix from these posts. Enjoy!

***UPDATE***

I’ve settled on the Podcasting plugin for WordPress for making these mixes available.

This recording was made at Mood Lounge (Second Life) on March 26th, 2009.

Nice! The Big Question performance went pretty much as planned. I was very impressed by the sounds Lee Chun coded up in real-time using Pure Data, and I hope we can do something together in the future. I did a twenty-minute solo set before being joined first by Chang Jui-chuan and then Kou Chou Ching. I love how adding more performers to the mix bumps up the energy levels. People were on their feet and dancing for Freedom Zen, so a nice first live performance there for Jui-chuan and me. And speaking of bumping up the energy levels, Kou Chou Ching really let rip! My big thanks to Jui-chuan, Fan-chiang, Fish Lin, and DJ J-little. We had a small meeting before the show and solidified some plans for a joint album featuring Kou Chou Ching, Chang Jui-chuan, DJ Point and myself to be released around June 2009 – watch this space.

The part I was most nervous about was doing the Ableton Live mix – live in front of people. Before the show I’d gone around recording random audience members, asking them to give me small sound bites to use in the mix. By the time I got to do the live mix, the audience had shrunk considerably and remaining audience members had had ample helpings of the Free Beer (ie. brewed according to a CC licensed recipe) – I was very relieved to have the pressure released somewhat. I thought the live mix sounded pretty cool, thank you very much. Keeping in mind how I’ve been at it for less than two weeks. Unfortunately the recording I made didn’t amount to much, so I took some time yesterday to recreate the mix using the same sample-pool. What you hear is 95% the Live mix with about 5% sweetening added because I couldn’t resist. I think it’s pretty cool to zone out to.

You can listen to the whole mix and download a copy from the SoundCloud player below.

I’ve just finished the video I’ve been working on for my track Freedom Zen with Chang Jui-chuan. The track is off the CABACA album (more info and download links here) which has just also become available on CD Baby for those who want to support this and possible future collaborations by buying a copy of the CD.

I wanted Jui-chuan’s lyrics to play the starring role in the video, so I “textified” CC licensed still images I found on flickr, with the help of visual keywords that Jui-chuan provided me with. I animated the images in AfterEffects, and mixed them with some blue-screen footage I shot with a Xacti CG65 camcorder. I drew some images with blue permament marker and Emily kindly wrote the traditional and simplified characters for me. To save time, I rendered some sections and backgrounds online with animoto.

There’s a link to watch the video in high quality on the song’s YouTube page. The video is also available on Vimeo and there’s a link to download the original 150MB .wmv-file.

Unfortunately I have no pics from when we recorded Chris Bailey’s guitar for Freedom Zen, but here are Chuang Tyng-Ruey’s photos from the recording session in Taipei where we recorded Jui-chuan’s vocals and Bobo on the drums.

The CABACA album is not only now available in shops here in Taiwan, but has also just been uploaded to Jamendo and is available for free download. It’s not quite the entire album (the full album has more than 50 tracks, including ringtones), but these first 11 tracks form the core of this collaboration album.

You can grab it here: CABACA ON JAMENDO

The website is still under construction, but you’ll soon be able to get all the information about the CABACA album and artists featured on the album from cabaca.org.

We’re also in the process of uploading a cappellas and a bunch of stems from the album to CCMixter.org. Grab those here (more to come):

http://ccmixter.org/people/CC_Asia_Band

That’s in addition to some online mixable tracks available at SPLICE, here:

It’s looking more and more likely that I’ll be attending this year’s iSummit at the end of July to share experiences working on the CABACA / CC Asia Band project. Last year’s iSummit was hosted in Croatia, but this year the host city is Sapporo, Japan. I sat in on one of the sessions broadcast live into SecondLife last year and even managed to ask a question of the panelists at that session. It makes me all the more excited to take part in person this year. I’m also hoping to do a performance of my live set to be streamed live in to SL, perhaps with some of the CABACA collaborators – we’ll have to see how that develops.

***UPDATE***

I have my air-ticket and have officially registered. Guess I’ll be going then, Now I’m just waiting for a letter of invitation from Sapporo City for my visa application.
