I got to take a turn on the red carpet with Kou Chou Ching at this year’s Golden Melody Awards in Taipei on Saturday. Kou Chou Ching was nominated in the category of best band for the Unsung Heroes album that I was featured on.

The award went to the band 1976, but it was a great experience being at the event. It’s the second year that Kou Chou Ching was nominated and I’m pretty sure they’ll win the award somewhere in the future – they’re hard-working guys, so it’s great to see them recognized.

I have a new weekly performance in Second Life at SL/RL artist Genevieve Silvercloud’s studio on Wednesday evenings. Genevieve streams webcam visuals into SL as she develops her latest canvas and I provide the soundtrack for an hour – it’s quite an immersive experience. According to Genevieve, my tunes are good to paint to – who’d have guessed?

I really enjoyed performing alongside Kou Chou Ching and Chang Jui-chuan in Taichung on Friday evening. The audience was considerably smaller than the one we had in Taipei; probably owing to the fact that KCC are Taipei based. While I’m proud of the fact that my audience is scattered all over the globe, it does mean that I can’t rely on a hometown crowd attending my performances. Getting a local fanbase is high up on my to-do list ;^)

Yay, the long promised MLO Sample Pack 2 with my samples from Epsiodes #11 – #22 is finally available! As with SP1, you can download it in 24 bit WAV or 256kbps MP3 flavors.

Nice to be back at Substance after missing the show there last week.

Wow, the second milestone came so quickly – 20 episodes and still going strong ;^) That also means you can expect another sample pack in the course of this week.

This week I feature some vocals by Kou Chou Ching from the Unsung Heroes album that I vocoded and used for my set at the Taipei album launch. I’ll check with KCC for permission to include these in the second sample pack.

I’m gearing up for my performance with Kou Chou Ching, Chang Jui-chuan and DJ Point at The Wall in Taipei this coming weekend. I admit to being a little nervous about the show – The Wall is a pretty important club and since my sets are improvised there’s always the possibility that things go South. That said, the set that I’m presenting here today turned out to be a real confidence booster, along with the capacity crowd at Substance. Thanks to everyone who came out – having you along for the ride makes it all worthwhile.

First up is a performance at Luvstock 2009 on Saturday, July 11th. Boston Paul of The Refuge in Dakeng is the organizer of this yearly event that just seems to keep growing. The following performers are confirmed for the two-day event:  DJ-REdo (Dominikolas), Militant Hippi Revolution, Dr. Reniculous lips and the Skallyunz, Plan B, The Stackers, Jon R. (Artist), David & The Flintstones, Waysoon, City of Earth, Point 22, Jagabags, Gruveballs, Tyler Dakin, and myself. Sounds like a party, so if you’re around Taichung on the 11th and 12th you know where to go.

I’m also really excited about performing at The Wall in Taipei for the first time on July 26th. The occasion is the CD release of “Kou Chou Ching presents: Unsung Heroes”. As we speak, I’m finishing up the master for the album. There will be performances by all the artists on the album, ie. Kou Chou Ching, Chang Jui-chuan, DJ Point, and myself. 1. I’ve finished a backbone mix for an EP with guitarist Chris Bailey. This weekend, I’ll be tracking Chris and myself jamming to the backtrack and then embroider on it further. At the moment, the idea is to sell this as a very long (25 – 30 minute) single for a buck. And to make it into a series with regular installments. I guess it all hinges around how the first one turns out. You can hear Chris and me jamming together two posts down…

2. Mixing a new track for Kou Cou Ching. This track is destined for a collaboration album featuring new tracks and remixes by Kou Chou Ching, Chang Jui-chuan, DJ Point and myself. This one will be a physical (CD) release and the release date is tentatively set for the middle of 2009.

Nice! The Big Question performance went pretty much as planned. I was very impressed by the sounds Lee Chun coded up in real-time using Pure Data, and I hope we can do something together in the future. I did a twenty-minute solo set before being joined first by Chang Jui-chuan and then Kou Chou Ching. I love how adding more performers to the mix bumps up the energy levels. People were on their feet and dancing for Freedom Zen, so a nice first live performance there for Jui-chuan and me. And speaking of bumping up the energy levels, Kou Chou Ching really let rip! My big thanks to Jui-chuan, Fan-chiang, Fish Lin, and DJ J-little. We had a small meeting before the show and solidified some plans for a joint album featuring Kou Chou Ching, Chang Jui-chuan, DJ Point and myself to be released around June 2009 – watch this space.

The part I was most nervous about was doing the Ableton Live mix – live in front of people.  Before the show I’d gone around recording random audience members, asking them to give me small sound bites to use in the mix. By the time I got to do the live mix, the audience had shrunk considerably  and remaining audience members had had ample helpings of the Free Beer (ie. brewed according to a CC licensed recipe) – I was very relieved to have the pressure released somewhat. I thought the live mix sounded pretty cool, thank you very much. Keeping in mind how I’ve been at it for less than two weeks. Unfortunately the recording I made didn’t amount to much, so I took some time yesterday to recreate the mix using the same sample-pool. What you hear is 95% the Live mix with about 5% sweetening added because I couldn’t resist. I think it’s pretty cool to zone out to.

The album is going to the factory this week for replication. Can’t wait for the final product – there’s always a huge sense of satisfaction in holding the CD in hand. There’s one thing I’d miss very much if we were to go all digital in the future.

Now it’s back to mixing tracks for Tafubar’s album, A Final Example Of Technological Change. Looking forward very much to holding that album in my grubby paws also!
