Upstream Downstream (Missing Pages)

Following the very successful premiere of Missing Pages in SL, I’m now releasing my track inspired by the film. I’m happy to report that the track was well received and I’m especially pleased that writer/director Jerome Olivier enjoyed it.

Here are some notes about the track, Upstream Downstream (Missing Pages):

I love the way music functions in the film and I had no intention to second guess the composer’s choices. Instead, my track references the film in a stand-alone kinda way – actually I don’t think my track would have fit anywhere in the movie, besides maybe as end-credit music ;^)

It’s a downtempo chill-out track (like most of the stuff I’m doing at the moment) and the title refers to the idea of time as a river that gently runs either upstream or downstream. I was hoping to reflect the kind of utopian / ideal-world vision that Professor Tanokura must have had for time-travel when he was working on it, supported here by the samples from the press conference at the start of the movie – especially the part about using time-travel for peaceful purposes only.

I also wanted to explore the idea of time-travel musically. You’ll hear a number of places in the track where the audio has been reversed, ie. time is running backwards. There’s also a section towards the end that sounds like it’s coming from an old LP record – playing here with the idea of the present as viewed from a long ways in the future.

I was chatting to Chill / Mark Forman earlier about how music actually is the closest thing we have to a time machine right now… how, on hearing music you haven’t heard for years, you’re transported back to that place or frame of mind. Seems applicable here.

Upstream Downstream (Missing Pages) is currently the first track in the MoShang Radio sidebar player and you’re welcome to download and share the .mp3 here. If you’re having trouble downloading the .mp3 directly, try downloading the .zip instead.

Coming up – Missing Pages SL event

Time for a blog-update, though no news is good news in this case. Had a really nice performance at Oyster Bay in SL today. Proprietor, Morris Vig, has created a really cool performance space amidst some very interesting SL sculptures. My thanks to Morris for hosting me and to Isolde Flamand for arranging the performance.

I happily sold my first album downloads via my new in-world vendor at the gig. Glad to know that the system is working! My albums remain available from numerous other online outlets (including iTunes), but it’s great to have the albums for sale within SL and in Linden Dollars – incidentally, the downloads are also slightly cheaper than elsewhere. At the moment, only the full album downloads are available in-world.

I’m working on a track inspired by Missing Pages for the SL premiere of this ground breaking photo-animated sci-fi thriller on the 19th. The innovative short has won numerous awards and writer/director Jerome Olivier will be in SL to talk about the film. I’m really looking forward to this one!

Live @ Playboy (SL)

DJ Doubledown Tandino hosts Deep Sexy Cool at Playboy (yup, the one and only!) every Tuesday night as part of the Playboy Music Series. I’ll be performing at the first of these events this Tuesday between 7pm and 8pm (SL Time).

My Secondfest performance has definitely been the highlight of my SL music career so far ;^) I’ll be updating the photos section soon with pics from my peformance. My thanks and congratulations again to everyone involved with Secondfest: Intel, the Guardian and Rivers Run Red. My special thanks to Slim Warrior for ensuring that everything ran smoothly on the Chill Island. Due in large part to her efforts, the Chill Island had the best attended stage at Secondfest. And of course to Doubledown Tandino for getting me on the bill in the first place.

Live @ Secondfest!

I’m on the bill for this weekend’s Secondfest in Second Life sponsored by the Guardian and Intel. The line-up is incredible – the headliners include Pet Shop Boys, Tom Findley (Groove Armada DJ Set), Cinematic Orchestra, Coldcut… I’ll be performing on Sunday on the Chill Island. The time is still to be confirmed, so check my live events calender.

I’m also very happy to announce a weekly gig at the Mood Lounge in SL. Starting this week, I’ll be performing at this chilled-out venue every Thursday between 10am and 11am (SL time).

***UPDATE***

My time has been confirmed as 7am – 8am PDT (SL Time) on Sunday. The full line-up at Secondfest has also been updated with performance times for all the artists. Please keep in mind that these times are for England. To get the Second Life time, subtract 8 hours from the advertised time. Confusing right? Welcome to my world – we’re 15 hours ahead of PDT!

Live @ Mood Lounge (SL)

I’ll be performing live at the Mood Lounge in Second Life this coming Saturday (June 23rd) at 12pm PDT. Nice location for chilling – the Asian setting suits my music perfectly. See you there!

***UPDATE***

That went rather nicely – nice to see some regular faces in addition to new ones. I’m speaking to owner, Joy Ash, about doing a regular performance at the Mood Lounge. It really is a prefect setting for my music.

It was also so the first performance on my upgraded PC. I got my motherboard back from Gigabyte on Friday, but after reinstalling it the PC would still not boot. I now suspected that the CPU had somehow given up the ghost. In order to save the show (really did not want to cancel another show due to a technical issue!), I upgraded the machine to the following spec on Saturday morning:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo: E6420

Motherboard: Asus P5B-E

Ram: 2GB DDR 667

I’m using the case, power supply, harddrives and graphics card (GeForce E6600) from the old machine. I know there are faster setups out there and Quad Core CPUs will soon become modestly priced, but the difference between this and my old 3GHz P4 setup is huge. And importantly, Second Life has yet to crash once on this machine with quality setting set to their highest. I’m VERY pleased!
