Groovesizer: coming soon…

I’ve been beavering away on this project for the last week or two. I’ve taken the open source Auduino synthesizer for the Arduino development platform, and have hacked on a 16-step sequencer. I’m very pleased with the way it’s shaping up!

I’ll post a video soon, but here are the details for now. I’ve added 8 LEDs and 5 buttons to the original design. The first 4 pots are tone controls, but when the buttons are pressed they also allow you to dial in the pitch for each of the 16 steps. The fifth pot and button have control functions. You can choose the sequence lenghth from 1 to 16 steps, control the tempo, swing and note length. I’m adding features as I think of them, but already it’s a sweet instrument to play. I like the fact that there’s no display and that you’re forced to rely on your ears.

I have some ATMEGA 328 chips on order from Hong Kong and the next step will be to replace the Arduino with a Hackduino and to move it along with the rest of the components off the breadboard and into the enclosure. I definitely want to add midi-out before I’m done, but when I’m far enough along I’ll post the Arduino source code and a schematic.

Live Online #149: Mistletoe

I’m still applying final tweaks to Suncake Lounge Vol.2, but the end is so close now, I can smell it! Now comes the part I find most stressful – coming up with a release strategy! So many options to choose from these days – trying to find a label to put the album out there, working with a label for distribution only, going the totally independent CD Baby route, all the way up to giving the album away for free. Choices, choices, and it always seems to be a shot in the dark either way.

Coming up after SCLv2, I intend to work with singer Sonja V. on her EP. We’ve worked on a couple of projects together in the past and it was great to reconnect on SCLv2.

Live Online #148: Little Gods

These last couple of days have called for a serious look at priorities and Chris Bailey and I have decided to shelf the Suncake Lounge Vol.2 project for now. We’re about 16 months into the project and I feel we’re very close to the end of the process, but it’s been a stop start affair and somehow we both lack the proper headspace for the final push right now. Nothing’s lost though and it will eventually see the light of day – just not as soon as we’d anticipated. In the meantime, I’m starting work on a new solo album.

Scrap all that! We’re back on track with Suncake Lounge Vol. 2 – rounding the bend into the final straight.

Live Online #147: Holding Pattern

Full geek alert! My DIY Ableton Live replacement project is coming along nicely I’ve built up a collection of audio solutions for the Arduino platform which include an Adafruit Wave Shield, two Rugged Audio Shields, a WTV020SD module, along with a couple of mini clip mp3 players which I’ve bent to be controlled by the Arduino. While I find the sound from the combination of these options acceptable, none of them has given me cd quality audio yet. So, I’m very excited to join beta testing for a new WavePro shield form Majenko. I’ll keep you posted on the progress.
