Live Online #68: Dreams

Happy July 4th to MLO listeners in the USA! The holiday meant there were only a handful of faithful souls at the SL show today, but I love how this one turned out nonetheless. It’s by no means a showcase of what it’s capable of, but you can hear a couple of string snippets I created with LA Scoring Strings.

Live Online #65: Nova

After finishing a new mix for Kou Chou Ching over the weekend, I’m more committed than ever to upgrading my desktop PC. A mix like the Kou Chou Ching one consists of more than 70 stereo tracks, each requiring plug-ins. My current Core2Duo machine handles it, with the caveat that I have to freeze tracks in Sonar as I go along. Looking forward to not having to freeze tracks on the Core i7 machine I’m planning to get. I’ll be building it myself to save some money. The new machine is still some months away though as I planned to buy it strictly with earnings from shows in Second Life… The wait will hopefully make the eventual purchase all the sweeter.

Live Online #64: Unicode

FedEx delivered my copy of LA Scoring Strings today and I can’t wait to install all 40GB of it and start playing. Not that it’s a toy – on the contrary, it’s the cutting edge of string libraries out there. And possibly the most advanced instrument in my studio. I got it mostly to improve the quality of the soundtrack I’m doing for the National Geographic documentary, and with an eye to doing more soundtrack work. But I can also see it being pushed into service on my chillout tracks.

Here’s the double-edged sword: if I can’t make my string arrangements sound good with the best tools available, it must mean that I suck at it. Never go into anything without a healthy dose of self-doubt.

Live Online #62: Magnetic

Looks like there’s a new version of Propellerhead’s Reason on its way – well, there’s a countdown on their front page here, so people are assuming it’s for Reason 5.

I’m a long-time user of Reason (a lot of this podcast gets made in Reason), and while I’m happy with the current version I would gladly upgrade for a 64-bit version of ReWire, the software that allows me to tie Reason to my Sonar sequencer.  Cakewalk’s Sonar has long been a 64-bit application, but I’ve been held back from upgrading to a 64-bit version of Sonar by the lack of ReWire support. Being able to make use of more than 3GB of memory would be great, especially when working with large sampling libraries (LASS here we come!).

While we’re wishing, I also hope for an improvement to clips in Reason’s sequencer. I do a lot of switching between Sonar and Reason when rewired and I keep getting tripped up by the way clips are implemented in Reason, often requiring more clicks to edit than I’m accustomed to in Sonar. It’s not a biggy, but it does get annoying and breaks workflow. Let’s see…

Live Online #61: Kicks

I thought it’s just me, but I had a chat with some musician friends about the good old days of MySpace. For all its faults, it seems we all found it much more conducive to finding collaborators than Facebook. I find Facebook fiddly and unintuitive – I guess that’s the price you pay for not living your entire life on Facebook as you’re supposed to ;^/ Aren’t we due for the next big thing in social networking yet? Diaspora perhaps?
