Antarctica – a Shruthi-1 4-Pole Mission Demo

My bouncy synthpop tune made entirely with the kit-built Shruthi-1 by Mutable Instruments. This Shruthi-1 features the 4-Pole Mission filter board. All patches are Shruthi-1 presets – I’ve added eq, reverb and delay to taste.

You can download the song from soundcloud if you like.

Live Online #145: Polar

I’ve finished my Shruthi-1 4-Pole Mission build, and in a personal victory also managed to flash the chip by myself. Damn, building these little boxes is highly addictive! It’s sounding great and I’m working on a demo track to show it off. Coming soon!

Building a Shruthi-1, 4-Pole Mission

I’m enjoying the little Shruthi-1 synth so much, that I’ve decided to build a second unit. The new one has the 4-Pole Mission filter board and I’m looking forward to hearing how it differs from my current Shruthi-1. This time I opted to buy just the pcb’s (sexy in white!) and to source the components myself online – actually I had quite a bit of help, since I could grab the BOMs here. I’m just about finished with the build, but I’m waiting for this (PDF) to arrive so that I can program the chip. Fun times, if you’re into this kind of geekery. If you want a Shruthi-1, but don’t want to build one yourself, drop me a line – I’m sure we can work something out ;^) I’ll do a demo with the 4PM Shruthi-1 once I have it up and running. In the meantime, here are some pics from the build…

Live Online #144: Hearts

This week’s set opens with Village By The River, a track I last performed before I started recording these podcasts, and which I don’t recall having released before. You’ll also continue to hear the voice of the Shruthi-1 throughout the set. I’ve managed to change the Shruthi-1’s software to work a little better with a wind controller – all thanks to the (intended) hackability of this little box. I know I’m going on about the Shruthi-1, but it’s such a change to work with an instrument I assembled myself and to have direct access its creator along with a network of engaged enthusiasts. Speaking of Mutable Instruments, the Ambika and Anushri synths have just been announced – yummy stuff!

Live Online #143: Torn

I had an unpleasant experience doing a real-world performance some months ago where Windows 7 decided to do an update right as I was about to start my set. Somehow the Novation Nio’s midi driver got borked in the process and I ended up having to do the 4 hour set with no wind controller 8^/ Although it wasn’t Reason’s fault, I’ve been looking at my existing hardware to replace it as tone generator with the WX-5 wind controller. So, after scratching my head for months for a way to get my Shruthi-1 to respond to breath control, I thought I’d just plug the WX in and see what it does. It turns out that although I could find no mention of the fact in the documentation, the Shruthi-1 responds to breath control (MIDI cc2) out of the box. Bonus! Breath appears to be hardwired to filter cutoff. I’m still experimenting, but you can hear my playing the Shruthi-1 via the WX-5 all over this set. Enjoy!
