Live Online #86: Spike

The APC20 controller is in place and I think have it set up nicely alongside the BCR2000. It suddenly opens up a world of direct access to as many faders as you have fingers. Hopefully you can hear a slight shift in these sets as I toy with the possibilities.

Live Online #85: Flight

If you’ve become accustomed to your weekly dose of chill, apologies for skipping a beat last week. The show I intended to record and release was cancelled, and I got caught without a backup.

As I type, I’m awaiting the delivery of an Akai APC20 for Ableton Live. I’ve been trying to ween myself off using a mouse in Live and have pushed my Behringer BCR2000 into service as a controller. I’ve managed to set it up so I can control about 90% of a typical set with the BCR2000, but the 10% that remains makes it all too easy to fall back into the mouse-trap (ha!). Also, there are times that faders are just a better option than rotary encoders. I think I’ll be using the BCR2000 in addition to the APC20. I’m sure I’ll get it set up exactly to my liking once I’ve had a chance to play with it properly.

Live Online #24: Phasing Pattern

Chris Bailey and I had a fun performance at Mojo Retro here in Taichung on the weekend – playing with Chris is always a pleasure and something I hope to do more of. Chris and I had our best audience to date – but then again, Retro is a small cozy place and it doesn’t take a large crowd to fill it. Nice to see Mark Forman and his son at the show. Mark’s photography graces the cover of Chris and my Suncake Lounge Vol.1.

Today’s episode takes its name from a technique US composer Steve Reich pioneered (big fan over here!). I’m always struck by how easy it is to set up Reich-like phasing patterns in Ableton Live. Listen out for it from about 30 minutes into the set.

MoShang & Bailey @ RETRO

After an absence of some months, Chris Bailey and I were were up to our old tricks (and some new ones) at Mojo Retro here in Taichung on Saturday. Below is an MP3 of the improvised section of our set, me on Ableton Live and windcontroller, and Chris on the guitar.
