Live Online #38: Substance

Club Substance, the venue for many of the episodes of this podcast, is turning one year old on December 8th. As part of the celebrations I’ll be doing a double-barrel show – an hour of chill, followed by something more uptempo. In the second set I’ll be DJing some of my more housey tracks, along with some tracks that inspire me.

I’m also preparing a short deep house set in Ableton Live that I want to perform live. I’m pushing my Behringer BCR2000 controller back into service for this, also with an eye to performing live dance sets with Louis Minnaar, one of my collaborators on the eentonig album.

I’ll be performing from 4-6pm PST and here’s the link if you have Second Life installed:

Live Online #37: Monotonous

It’s been a busy week, readying the eentonig (monotonous) album for release and getting it out there. It’s all done, except for the coffee table book which will become available in the next week or two. You can listen to and download the fruits of this labor from eentonig.com.

It’s not chillout by any stretch of the imagination, but rather experimental, dark with a dash of industrial and all in my home language of Afrikaans. If it sounds like something you might enjoy, do click on through to the link above and help us spread the word.

I’ve had to cancel some SL performances to get the album out, so this podcast was delayed by a couple of days.

Live Online #36: Durian

With mixing work on the Afrikaans language eentonig album now completed, I had time to make a couple of new elements for the MLO podcast again. That album will be released as a free download at eentonig.com on December 1st and I think it showcases a side of me you haven’t heard before. Remember to check back on the 1st.

Live Online #35: Spirit

I’m planning a 2 week get-away with Em. to Thailand over the Chinese New Year period (mid-February). Really looking forward to it, since Em. and I had to forgo on a honeymoon when we got married earlier this year – hey, we deserve it ;^)

On mentioning this at the Substance show today, I got lots of invites to visit the States, too. I’d love to do a small tour of the US (have never been) and to meet people that I only know via their SL avatars in real life. I don’t see it happening anytime soon, but I’m putting it on my long-term to-do list.

Live Online #34: Breathing

A listener asked me for a run-down of the software I use and what I use it for. So here it is in short:

Propellerhead Reason 4: my first stop when I work on a new track. I’ll generally take a song to about 70% completed before bouncing individual tracks into Sonar for additional arrangement, mixing and mastering. I use Reason to create most of the original loops you hear in the MLO podcast. Reason is also the only tone generator I use with the WX-5 midi wondcontroller that’s heard all over MLO.

Cakewalk Sonar 8.5: all of my tracks pass trough Sonar for mixing – it’s a superb environment, offering a slick, customizable workflow. Unlike Reason it allows me to record live audio and to make use of scores of VST plugins to get tracks to sit just right. It’s my primary tool for doing remixes (when doing remixes, I’ll work in Sonar from the start and use Reason to add elements). Generally I’ll mix with mastering plug-ins enabled, so that a track is finished and mastered by the time it leaves Sonar.

Ableton Live 7.0.16 (Lite – M-Audio enhanced edition): my main tool for performing/mixing live – the episodes of the MLO podcast are all mixed in Ableton. I have it set up with 8 tracks named as follows: Music 1 (music loops), Music 2 (music loops), CrowdSourced (non-musical elements), Perc (percussion elements), Bass, Drums 1, Drums 2, WX-5 (windcontroller rewired from Reason). During performances, I drag loops from my sample pool into the appropriate track’s clips and take it from there. It pays to stay organized ;^)

Sony Sound Forge 9: editing of completed mixes, or micro-editing, restoration of individual samples, culling loops.

Sony CD Architect 5: creating replication ready CD masters.
