Creating Sweeps and Swells with Reason’s Thor Synth [Tutorial]

I’ve been using Reason to create sweeps and swells for my MLO sets, and I thought it would be a good subject for a first tutorial.

I’m using Reason 6.0.2 in the vid, but the Thor synth has been around since Reason 4.

Live Online #77: Odyssey

With the master for Further East safely delivered to the label, now would be a good time to upgrade my software. I’m expecting my upgrade to Propellerhead Reason 5 at any time. Looking forward to getting up to speed with the new features, and am especially excited about the new sampling feature and the Kong drum designer. The Blocks feature also looks very handy, allowing you to experiment with the structure of a song with the minimum of fuss. Hmmm, I see Ableton has also updated Live to 8.1.5 (I’m on 8.1.3) – eager to see if the weird little issue with some channels dropping out unexpectedly is resolved.

Live Online #63: Snapper

The reveal over at Propellerhead that I mentioned last week was stretched out over 5 days and turned out to be for Reason 5/Record 1.5 after all. A host of new features were announced (Peter Kirn has a good summary of the new features on his Create Digital Music blog), many of which have been requested by users for a long time, but sadly there was no mention of a 64-bit Rewire as I’d hoped. I’ll be upgrading of course, but I’m still hoping for the improved Rewire somewhere along the line.

Live Online #62: Magnetic

Looks like there’s a new version of Propellerhead’s Reason on its way – well, there’s a countdown on their front page here, so people are assuming it’s for Reason 5.

I’m a long-time user of Reason (a lot of this podcast gets made in Reason), and while I’m happy with the current version I would gladly upgrade for a 64-bit version of ReWire, the software that allows me to tie Reason to my Sonar sequencer.  Cakewalk’s Sonar has long been a 64-bit application, but I’ve been held back from upgrading to a 64-bit version of Sonar by the lack of ReWire support. Being able to make use of more than 3GB of memory would be great, especially when working with large sampling libraries (LASS here we come!).

While we’re wishing, I also hope for an improvement to clips in Reason’s sequencer. I do a lot of switching between Sonar and Reason when rewired and I keep getting tripped up by the way clips are implemented in Reason, often requiring more clicks to edit than I’m accustomed to in Sonar. It’s not a biggy, but it does get annoying and breaks workflow. Let’s see…
