Steve Reich – 2×5 (MoShang Morse Mix)

2x5

I don’t generally go in for remix competitions too much, but this is Steve frickin’ Reich!

You can listen to my Morse Mix of 2×5 over at Indaba Music – oh wait, there’s a handy widget (see below). If you like it, please vote for the mix – a page from the score signed by Mr. Reich would look really tasty framed and up on my studio wall ;^)

The full title of the original is 2×5 Movement III: Fast (Album Version), performed by Bang on a Can off the album Double Sextet / 2×5.

***UPDATE***

Sadly, my remix didn’t make it into the top ten – it ended 30th out of 256 entries in the popular vote. A big congrats to to the winners and to those remixers who did make it into the top ten! Listen to the top entries here.

Live Online #24: Phasing Pattern

Chris Bailey and I had a fun performance at Mojo Retro here in Taichung on the weekend – playing with Chris is always a pleasure and something I hope to do more of. Chris and I had our best audience to date – but then again, Retro is a small cozy place and it doesn’t take a large crowd to fill it. Nice to see Mark Forman and his son at the show. Mark’s photography graces the cover of Chris and my Suncake Lounge Vol.1.

Today’s episode takes its name from a technique US composer Steve Reich pioneered (big fan over here!). I’m always struck by how easy it is to set up Reich-like phasing patterns in Ableton Live. Listen out for it from about 30 minutes into the set.

This recording was made at Substance (Second Life) on August 30th, 2009.
