Live Online #28: Inspired

I had two great opportunities to grab outside inspiration in Taipei this weekend. The first was Underworld‘s first performance in Taiwan on Saturday. When I just arrived in Taiwan, I listened “A Hundred Days Off” on constant repeat, so it was great to kinda come full circle and see the band live. Their performance was just an explosion of audio-energy. Perhaps understandably they didn’t do any of their more downtempo stuff live – a pity for me since I’m a great fan of the direction they took on the EP’s of the Riverrun Project.

On Sunday, I visited a fantastic exhibition in the Taipei Fine Arts Museum charting the animated movies of Pixar over 20 years. Beautiful early character sketches in a variety of media, colorscripts, cast models used in the animation process. I was just overwhelmed by the amount of work, love, dedication that went into the creation of the films.

But enough with the chatter, here’s Live Online #28: Inspired

Live Online #27: Older

Hey, hey – a year older today, but none the wiser. Forgot to clear the SD card of archived sets and didn’t manage to catch the set at Substance today. So here is last week’s Mood Lounge performance.

My copy of Propellerhead Record made it through customs and I’m busy working out where it fits in my workflow.

Doing some emergency mixes for an upcoming album featuring South African writer/painter Breyten Breytenbach reading his own awesome poetry… he’s just turned 70, so the album is intended as a celebration of his work. I mixed a number of tracks featuring his work for three albums some years ago, so it feels good to be at it again.

Live Online #26: Cycles

After due consideration, I’ve decided to spring for Propellerhead’s new Record software. I really don’t like the idea of a dongle for copy protection and I have no illusions that it will replace Cakewalk’s Sonar as my DAW of choice for mixing – for that it lacks extensive audio editing and VST plug-in support. However, the super-tight integration with Reason, really cool mixer emulation, as well as the inclusion of Line 6 Pod and Bass Pod modules tipped the scales for me. Couple that with the great price for users of Reason 4 and I’m prepared to give the Props the benefit of the doubt on this one. Argh, I just checked UPS’s tracking page and my copy of Record is sitting stranded in Taoyuen for lack of an import document…

Windows 7 & M-Audio Fast Track Ultra

***UPDATE 2*** Official 32-bit and 64-bit drivers for Windows 7 are now available here: http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support&tab=driver&PID=926320a5a5686189748193dbd6eb7d5f&serie_ID=6#tabs

For my own experience with the Windows 7 32-bit driver, have a look here: http://moshang.net/soundjeweler_blog/by-the-ways/new-pc/

***UPDATE*** M-Audio released a BETA driver for the FTU on October 13th. I’ll be upgrading to Win 7 soonish and will report on my findings then. You can download the BETA driver for yourself here: http://forums.m-audio.com/showthread.php?p=58296

I reported on a quick experiment with the Windows 7 Beta and my M-Audio Fast Track Ultra soundcard in January and have been following developments regarding a dedicated driver for the FTU with an eagle eye. Well, it’s September and the driver I’m waiting for is still in the development stage (read low on their list of priorities). At least they have added a handy page to chart progress on the M-Audio / Windows 7 driver front. Not sure if the image below will update, but here goes:

Live Online #25: Kenting

I’ve just returned from a glorious two days in Kenting at the southern tip of Taiwan – beautiful weather and I spent most of my time floating in the waters of the Taiwan Strait Pacific / Northern Philippine Sea (I stand corrected, Mark). I have to remember to recharge my batteries like this more often.

Since I only arrived back a couple of hours ago, there was no show at Substance today and I’m releasing my last Mood Lounge performance here instead.
