I’ve been performing my music in Second Life for the last 18 years (yes, SL is still around.) I’m upping my visual game with a small utility app I made that takes an incoming MIDI note and transmits a song title and BPM into the game. I’m using it to trigger visual effects in SL. I’m hoping there’s more to be done with syncing things to the BPM, but I’m happy with the result for now.
After over a decade since his last release on Lemongrassmusic, downtempo maestro MoShang returns with Coral Harp, a dreamy and immersive collection that picks up right where he left off. For those familiar with MoShang’s album Further East, released in 2011, Coral Harp will feel like a warm reunion with an old friend.
His signature melodic chill and blissful atmospheres are present once again, gentle but persuasive, across these five tracks. However, there’s an added layer of organic texture courtesy of MoShang’s new environment. In the intervening years since Further East, the producer relocated to the foothills outside Taichung, Taiwan. There, he found himself surrounded by a teeming subtropical ecosystem.
The ever-present hum of insects and birds in his countryside home became the foundational element for Coral Harp, providing an ambient bed for each piece. You can feel the living, breathing landscape enmeshed within lush synthesizer pads and time-weathered vinyl loops.
From the gently pulsing tones of the hypnotic opener “Dreaming of the One That Came After” to the lilting grooves of “On the Backs of Seahorses,” Coral Harp transports the listener to a serene sonic realm. By incorporating field recordings from his natural surroundings, MoShang has created an experiential album that dissolves the boundaries between electronic and organic worlds.While the music of Coral Harp feels attuned to eternal cycles and rhythms, it also captures a very specific sense of place—MoShang’s own little corner of paradise nestled in Taiwan’s lush countryside. We’re truly fortunate he chose to share it with us.

It’s been a while since I’ve officially released a new album, and while “real life” has prevented me from producing as much music as I’d have liked, I’ve kept working on new material for my online performances in Second Life. This year I managed to do 3 full hour sets with all new material. Here’s to more to come!
