What Comes Around – Stone Bell Music – 2011 – SBM001

MoShang’s seventh full-length album differs from previous offerings in that it exists solely as an App for Android smartphones. The full version of the album has a running time of roughly an hour, and features 14 tracks that are dynamically remixed every time the album is played. Quite literally, the album will never play through twice in exactly the same way. In addition to rudimentary mix controls, the listener also has the option to “let the world in” by turning up the cellphone microphone. Letting the app mix in environmental sounds further ensures that each repeated listen is a unique and personalized experience.

Groove Suite – Onse Plate – 2011 – ONSE106-d

At some stage in their careers, all pop musicians apparently start to wonder what their music would sound like in a symphonic setting. Antonio Carlos Jobim, the undisputed boss of bossa, did it in 1976 with his Urubu album, apparently as a tribute to the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. Think of Yellow Shark, Frank Zappa’s final album before he passed away. More recently, hip-hopper Kanye West did it with his 2006 album, Late Orchestration. And just last year (2010), Sting released his Symphonicities album of symphonic reinterpretations of some of his biggest hits – recording and touring with no less than the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orcherstra. And now, MoShang can add himself to the list.

Further East – Lemongrassmusic – 2010 – LGM 068-4

MoShang’s latest full-length release finds the Taiwan-based producer back in the sonic terrain he first explored on “Made In Taiwan” (2004), and delved deeper into on “Chill Dynasty” (2006), the free “Asian Variations” (2007) remix album, and the “Stone Bell” EP (2008). He has since perfected his unique marriage of laid-back beats and cutting edge electronica with traditional Chinese instruments and found-sounds gathered in his Oriental environment. “Further East” provides abundant evidence that the South African expatriate sound jeweler is now completely at home both in Asia and in his distinct sound, by turn hypnotic and dreamy, whimsical with a touch of melancholy, playful and uplifting, and always harmonious.

Suncake Lounge Vol. 1 – Onse Plate – 2009 – ONSE105

Australian guitarist Chris Bailey and I first met in 2005 when we performed together at the Taichung Jazz Festival. I guess we let time slip. Almost three years later in May of 2008, Chris and I were invited to play together at the opening of Mojo Retro, a coffee-shop and live music venue near the Taichung Art Museum. After our mutual surprise to learn that the other was still around and had been here all this time, we fell into easy conversation and happily we were able to continue that free exchange in our playing.

Stone Bell (EP) – Onse Plate – 2008 – ONSE104-d

MoShang continues to blend traditional Asian instruments and voices with contemporary beats, connecting dots on a musical time-line that spans the ages, making sparks fly between them – when beats and notes align just so, something magical is revealed.

Asian Variations – Various Artists Remixed by MoShang Onse Plate – 2007 – ONSE103

The Asian Variations album is a collection of 14 remixes produced by MoShang in his Chinese Chill style of downtempo electronica, melding deeply laid-back beats with Chinese traditional instruments. Some of these remixes were solicited by the original artists, two were done for remix competitions, and in some cases MoShang approached artists directly requesting permission to remix their work. The artists represented on the album are literally from all over the globe; The U.S.A. (Fort Minor, Toao, Lovespirals, Brad Reason), Taiwan (Kou Chou Ching, Chang Jui-chuan, Viba, Andre van Rensburg, MoShang), South Africa (Gordon’s Suitcase), Japan (Akihiko Matsumoto & Chage), Italy (Tafubar), and Slovenia (PureH).

Chill Dynasty – Onse Plate – 2006 – ONSE102

The essence of chillout music is tasteful composition, multi-dimensional production, and the limitless sonic palette available to modern producers. Attempted by many, marrying state-of-the-art electronic waveforms with ancient Asian timbres is a delicate process successful only by inspiration, not by experimentation. MoShang achieves this, presenting some of the finest recordings to date uniting these disparate eras of musical sound as if concurrent.

Made In Taiwan Onse Plate – 2004 – ONSE101

MoShang’s debut, Made in Taiwan reflects one foreigner’s first impressions of Asia and captures moments from everyday life. Whilst taking delight in its strangeness, it places it in the more familiar musical context of western electronica with styles ranging from downtempo to breakbeat.

AEROBIUM:

Saturated Tigergrass Records – 2011 – TGR0058

Aerobium is a side-project of Taiwan-based artist MoShang. Producer Jean Marais once again gives evidence of his ability to dive deeply into a specific music genre without losing touch with his musical roots. On this EP he masterfully explores the realms of Deep House and fans of his MoShang releases will certainly recognize the Asian spices that he subtly employs within his works. They are lush – they are tasty – and they are finely saturated with sublime flavours and exhilarating scents.
